So much for Send me your tired, your poor ...  Under the Newspeak ubiquitous in the Trump Administration, The New Colossus really meant to say Send me your tired, your self-sustaining ...

Ken Cuccinelli , Acting Director (is there any other kind in Trump-world?) of Citizenship and Immigration Services, is a self-identified climate change denier.  In recent years, this paragon of enlightenment has tried to:

• prohibit undocumented immigrants from attending universities
• repeal birthright citizenship
• force employees to speak only English on the job

Any of these could have been used against members of my family  Note, however, that in the case of Grandfather Joseph Petrovsky, the country and its economy would have suffered.  Grandpa Joseph was made a foreman in the Edgar Thompson Works of U.S. Steel , the image of which acts as page header for every post ion this blog.  He was offered the job because he spoke five eastern- and central-European languages, and could, therefore, be relied upon to keep work crews functioning smoothly..

Today, Cuccinelli announced a significant change in immigration policy in the United States.  He stated that, unless an individual is determined to be self-sustaining, that is:

• has a regular income
• does not use any form of public assistance (e.g., SNAP or LiHEAP)

 he or she, unless they're extraordinarily wealthy, will be denied a green card, that is, permanent resident alien status.

Despite being white, well-educated,  and non-Hispanic, I'd have been denied.
