Nancy Got It Done

Yesterday evening, Speaker of the House Nancy Pelosi phoned Donald Trump.  Pelosi urged Trump to cancel deportation raids by Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE), scheduled for tomorrow in ten American cities.

To quote CNN, Trump pulled back on the raids today.

She Has a Plan for That

It's become a bit of a wry joke from the Elizabeth Warren campaign, even to the point of having the phrase emblazoned on T-shirts.

Indeed Warren does have a plan for just about every issue.  Look here for a dozen or more.  My personal favorite?  Getting rid of the Electoral College.

Note also the similarities between Warren's proposals and what I consider an apotheosis of progressive thinking - FDR's Second Bill of Rights.

Hope Hicks

The transcript of Hicks'  testimony Tuesday to the Judiciary Committee of the House of Representatives isn't as long as the Muellar Report - 273 pages for the former, compared to 448 for the latter.  But as much as I've found (those sections of) the Mueller Report (that I've read) fascinating, I'm of the opinion that the Hicks transcript could be even more dispositive from an evidentiary point of view.

See what you think; take a look at the Hicks transcript here.

Like Father, Like Son

Donald Trump Jr. yesterday exhibited a callousness and insensitivity that rivaled even his father's penchant for cruel remarks.  During the kick-off rally for the 2020 Trump Presidential campaign, Don Jr. mocked Joe Biden, and the former VP's decades-long interest in finding a cure for cancer.

Don Jr. neglected to mention that Mr. Biden lost his son Beau to brain cancer in 2015.

Ignorance of the Law

There's a saying among attorneys - ignorance of the law is no defense.

Here's one way to avoid being backed into that tight corner.  The law school of Cornell University has collected all 54 Federal Codes into a single body, complete with a detailed Table of Contents.

So, if you're curious about Federal laws that govern the treatment of Native Americans, check these out.  Or, if you'd rather study up on legislation about telecommunications, try the linked-to section.

It's the most laudable achievement of any free society - to make the rules under which it governs universally available.  Don't look this gift-horse in the mouth.

Poverty R Us

As many as 48% of the population of this country live at or below the poverty line. Yet, the Trump Administration seeks to define down the number that draws that line.  So, rather than an annual gross income of $11,770.00 for a single person, the Administration wants to let the poverty demarcation line fluctuate with the Consumer Price Index.

Why does it matter? Such a change of method would allow the Federal government to deny thousands of our fellow citizens access to programs designed to help the poor.

In other words, if you're not destitute, the Administration thinks you should be on your own.

Like Summer Camp

Members of the Trump Administration have referred to the areas along our border with Mexico where immigrant minors are held as being like summer camp.

Not even close.
